PRACTICE CONTENTS

The main purpose of Aikido is to develop both the body and the mind. Practice helps to develop self-confidence, reducing stress, and keeping balance in every aspect of life. The training is progressive and cooperative, so anyone can practice regardless of age, sex, or physical ability.

Class Format and Contents

Classes are conducted in a dynamic and friendly way, using English and Japanese as main instruction languages.

Each class includes a short 10-minute warm-up, followed by rolls and falls (ukemi), basic techniques (kihon), and then moving on to more flowing techniques. Empty-handed techniques are practiced, in addition to weapons techniques using the wooden sword (bokuto), the staff (jo), or the wooden knife (tanto).

There is no gender or level distinction made during class, and everyone is expected to practice cooperatively at a pace that is the most adapted to the degree of competence of the junior student.

Dojo Expectations

"Rei ni hajimari, rei ni owaru" - Beginning and ending with a bow of respect.

Proper observance of etiquette (reishiki) is as much a part of Aikido training as is learning techniques. It also ensures a safe and pleasant training environment for all.

Yokohama AikiDojo students are expected to be aware and follow all the dojo expectations.

Grading Examination

In Japanese martial arts, grades indicate a practitioner's level of skill, knowledge, and experience. They are typically divided into two main categories. Kyū (級) grades – These are the beginner to intermediate levels, usually counted in descending order. Dan (段) grades – These are the advanced levels, starting from 1st dan (shodan). Dan grades often signify a black belt level and above, with increasing responsibility, maturity, and depth of understanding.

As a dojo officially affiliated to the Aikikai Foundation, grades that are obtained at Yokohama AikiDojo are issued by the Aikido World Headquarters and are recognized all over the world.
